  • BomBardak The Story of the BomBarďák Kid - BomBarďák Kid

    18. 10. 2014, 13:00

    Minor Theatre - Velká scéna

    60 min.

The BomBarďák Kid is not the role model for your children.  But you can use him to demonstrate that…schools should not be lit on fire. Animals should not be tortured.  Parents should not be locked on the balcony (sometimes).  The only thing this ‘hip hopper’ is interested in, is music.  If the guys hadn’t have kicked him out of the band.  Folk yeah!  Short scenes, wild strings, crazy talk and large bundles of dance.

written and directed by Jiří Jelínek
music: Michal Dalecký a Filip Nebřenský
    lyrics: Jiří Jelínek
starring: Michal Dalecký, Filip Nebřenský, Jiří Jelínek

The Story of the BomBárďák kid is an interactive musical theatre show.  Catchy songs are interspersed with vignettes in which the BomBarďák Kid communicates with the child audience and engages him into the action on stage.  The performance might be meant for children, but the adult accompaniment will definitely not be bored either.

Juventus Collegium FOK, a chamber ensemble founded by the younger players of the Symphony Orchestra FOK, played its debut concert in the spring of 2009.  A certain specificity is given to this ensemble due to its variability in the number of players (from a duo to a small chamber orchestra) and the related diversity of the instrumental structure as well as the possibility of a very rich repertoire.

Pavel Trojan jr. (*1984) began composing during his studies at secondary school.  He studied at the Prague Conservatory graduating with a piece called Vocal Symphony R. U. R. (2006) loosely inspired by Čapek’s play.  He continued his composition studies with Václav Riedlbauch at the Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he graduated from Music Management.  At the Prague Conservatory he also completed his studies of conducing taught to him by professors Košler, Farkač and Němcová.  His festival debut took place in May 2014 at the Prague Spring, where he introduced himself while conducting the Prague Symphonic Orchestra FOK in the Municipal House.

He composes music for theatre productions, mainly directed by Pavel Ondruch.  He played in the theatre from a young age – he started as a member of  the Chldren’s Opera at the Kolowrat Theatre, later he appeared in leading roles of musicals Rychlé šípy (Fast Arrows) and Bylo nás pět (There Were Five of Us) (showed at Divadle Na Vinohradech and at the Estates Theatre), he also worked as a television actor.

Romeo and Juliet is a ballet in three acts inspired by the eponymous tragedy by Willian Shakespeare. The music for the ballet was composed in 1936 by Sergej Prokofjev.

  • Harlekin Harlequin - led by Karel Dohnal

    18. 10. 2014, 18:00

    Minor Theatre - Malá scéna

    60 min.

A merry show in which the traditional figure of the Harlequin is reborn as a musician called Harlequin.  The audience will be completely absorbed and pulled into a unique atmosphere full of humour and funny scenes, Karlheinz Stockhausen’s music brilliantly performed by Karel Dohnal, who will introduce himself as a dancer, a mime and a clarinet player.

Apart from the Harlequin, the stage will also welcome other characters from the magical world of dreams – a lyricist in love, a pedantic teacher, a naughty mocker, a passionate dancer and finally even a ghost, spinning in the heights with the cries of birds.  This completely unique show is extra demanding for the artist, which is why it is currently performed by only a few clarinettists in the world.

Karel Dohnal is the winner of several major international competitions (Prague Spring, Rome, Bayreuth, Oostende, Seville, London).  He graduated from the Ostrava conservatory, the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and had internships at universities in London, Berlin, St. Petersburg and Hilversum.  In his career so far he has had concerts in many countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America.  He has collaborated with the Tokyo String Quartet, soprano Edita Gruberová, with pianists Eugeny Samoilov, Martin Kasík and a number of domestic and foreign orchestras. He is the member of the Amadeus Trio and the PhilHarmonia Octet.

Karlheinz Stockhausen (22nd August 1928 – 5th December 2007) was a German composer and one of the most important innovators, but also very controversial figures of the 20th century music scene, particularly famous for his experiments in electronic music and the system of “controlled chance” in surrealist compositions.

Vltava is a music group that existed between 1986 and 2003; it recovered its activity in 2010.  It is considered to be one of the most original Czech ensembles, typical for its surrealistic texts.  The author of most of the songs is the founder of the group Robert Nebřenský.  The activity of the group concert-wise shows that an increasing number of people understand that Vltava’s concerts are something they will later remember with love.

  • Skety The Band without Instruments

    19. 10. 2014, 17:30

    Minor Theatre - Malá scéna

    60 min.

What is the human voice capable of?  Is chamber singing a prerogative of classical music, or can it sound amazing even when it is jazz, pop, reggae or drum’n’bass without instrumental accompaniment?  How does beat box work?  And how does a choir improvise?  The vocal group SKETY will tell you all the secrets of a cappella singing, and if you feel like it, you can sing too !

SKETY are a vocal music group composed of young Czech jazz singers and musicians that have devoted themselves to music fully and professionally.  There are many a cappella ensembles that sing jazz, but in Skety’s case a curious thing has happened – that is that the band is composed of exclusively active jazzmen.  All of the Skety are frontmen in their own projects, bands, big bands and their shared singing a cappella is a pleasant superstructure to them.  See for yourself that their jazz hearts and experience are heard at the concert!

We’ll be ‘film-making’ this year too, this time we’ll go on a trip with an animated orchestra!  A string quartet, the wind section or a rock band on the road – that will all be possible using the puppet, semi-plastic and facet animation techniques.  For the more adventurous we have prepared an animated loop, we’ll also try pixelating items.  We’ve already seen a gorilla playing drums, if you want to join us and travel across musical genres, see you at Minor!

The civic association ULTRAFUN was founded by graduates of the Studio of Film and TV Graphics of the College of Applied Arts in Prague in March 2009.  It deals with the organisation of animation workshops for children and adults, during which the participants can try different types of animation and create their own short animated film.

  • Petra Ernyei Swing is fun! - Swingfonix and Petra Ernyei

    19. 10. 2014, 17:00

    Minor Theatre - Velká scéna

    60 min.

The breath-taking rhythm of the most beautiful songs from the golden age of swing will force you to dance or at least tap your foot to the beat…  Swingfonix and Petru Ernyei will be accompanied by stylish dancers from the Zig-Zag studio.

    Petra Ernyeiová vocals
    Marek Rejhon – guitar, vocals
    Rudolf Musil – clarinet, saxophone
    Jakub Šafr – piano
    Petr Pospíšil – double bass

Old friends came together in a new band…  That is how you can summarise the circumstances of the formation of the band Swingfonix. The five musicians played together in the Jakub Šafr Quartet, Hottentots Orchestra, Shaffer’s Riffers and other groupings.  Now they form the backbone of the Harlemania bigband and in the spring of 2014 they decided to give their co-playing a new impulse and founded Swingfonix.

Petra Ernyei grew up in a jazz environment from a very young age.  As a child she had the privilege to listen to the leading Czech jazz musicians at her house as they used this space for their music sessions – Pavel Klikar, Honza Štolba, Bob Zajíček, Irena and Vojta Havlovi and many others.

ZIG-ZAG Dance Studio tap & swing, which focuses mainly on the styles of the 20s and 30s, is led by Ing. Zdeněk Pilecký, a representative of the International Tap Association for the Czech Republic, a former ballet dancer for the Music Theatre in Karlin and the State Opera Prague, currently a teacher at the Dance Centre Conservatory Prague.  The studio offers public lessons of tap dancing, jazz, swing combined with acrobatics, conditioning and individual sessions of selected dance techniques, he leads seminars for other dance studios and organises workshops with foreign teachers.  Since 1999 he organises the annual celebration of the International Day of Tap Dancing.  Every month he holds a swing ball with a programme that incorporates his foreign guests and is open to the public.  The ZIG-ZAG dance group is part of the studio that performs its tap and swing dancing repertoire.

  • Jitka Šuranská Sun, Please Don’t Set - Jitka Šuranská and guests

    18. 10. 2014, 10:30

    Minor Theatre - Velká scéna

    60 min.

The songs (not only) from the album ‘Nezachoď slunečko’ (Sun, Please Don’t Set) that won the Anděl prize for World music in 2013 performed by one of the most distinctive young voices of the Moravian song tradition. Jitka Šuranská, a violinist and singer with strong Moravian roots, plays with an unconventional line-up, specially prepared for Strings for Kids, the song gems of the archaic Moravian tradition as well as songs that are dearest to her heart.

Jitka Šuranská comes from the heart of Slovakia, from a family of singers who all grew up on folklore, they sing in a clear voice with no quirks, but with a constant feel for the song’s lyrics.  Jitka does not do a sloppy job of a single note and sings beautiful drone melodies with absolute accuracy in the weighted length of individual syllables. This fascinating young (and charming) lady with her violin is very far from all the pseudo-folklorists in their traditional costumes, but it is without a doubt that she is in her element with this music like not many others.

For many years she played and sang in the excellent Cimbálová muzika Stanislava Gabriela (Cimbalom music of Stanislav Gabriel), she collaborated with numerous musicians such as a duet with Jiří Plocek (album Písňobraní), Lucie Redlova, Stano Palúch or the folk-rock group Docuku, she is also a violinist in the Zlín Philharmony of Bohuslav Martinů.  Her first solo album ‘Sun, Please Don’t Set’ firmly rooted in Moravian folklore genre won a Genre Andel prize for the World music category in 2013.  Jitka approaches the traditional material personally: she enriches it with her experiences from the world music scene, uses a loop station, sometimes you can hear jazz undertones on her recordings. Jitkay Šuranska is growing into a strong persona continuing on the relatedly-themed work of Iva Bittova or Zuzana Lapcikova.

Jitka herself says: I am a violinist and a singer. Or am I perhaps a singer and a violinist? Who would bother with the order… My roots are strong, Moravian…  So strong that I don’t want to leave them.  At the same time I am looking for a new way to express myself, I sing ancient tests and tunes and play my fiddle alongside them.  I use a loop station, because I believe that a musician in this century should have a gadget like this at home…  I feel like it’s a live and current question. How to deal with tradition, how much should be hold on and how not to stop developing…

  • Endru There is only one music - End.ru and guests

    18. 10. 2014, 18:00

    Minor Theatre - Velká scéna

    60 min.

Ondřej Havlík aka End.ru and his friends want to convince you that it does not matter what instrument you play, bur HOW you play.  Four excellent musicians with a unique sense of rhythm – when the music is going, they love playing.

Beat box, vocals: Ondřej Havlík aka En.dru
    piano: Jiří Vidasov
    flute: Jan Kyncl
alto saxophone, double bass: Jan Fečo

Ondra Havlík aka End.ru has collected a number of awards during his active work in the field of music for his beat box and looping.  He has invited several guests from different musical shores for his performance at Strings for Kids.  Will he be able to connect classical instruments with super-modern techniques?  End.ru and his friends want to convince us that there is only one kind of music!

Ondra Havlík has a number of awards to his name: World Vice-Champion in looping (Boss World Looping Championship), two-time Champion of the Czech Republic in beat box, the winner of the European competition 1st Marathon beat box battle, Champion and Vice-Champion in the category of team beat boxing with Beatburger band, two-time winner of Czech Boss Looping contest. In addition to the combination of beat box and vocal improvisation End.ru also uses musical improvisation with the use of a loopstation.  This “contraption” works as a looper of recorded tracks that are gradually recorded directly in front of the audience without the use of any other electronic effects or instruments.  This leads to the production of live ‘a cappella’ improvisations of various music styles (electro, hip-hop, acid jazz, funky, ethno), which include a beat box rhythm, vocals, beat box effects, instrument imitations, rap…  The beat box show gets a whole new dimension.

Jan Kyncl (flute, alto saxophone, bansuri, composition) comes from a family with a musical tradition, he started studying classical European music at the age of six, but was fascinated by improvisation and jazz.  In the end he set off in this direction and studied jazz saxophone at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory.  He improvises, performs, composes.

    Jiří Vidasov – piano

Jan Fečo – saxophone, double bass
