Wayne Shorter at 80

After last year’s unforgettable Sonny Rollins concert, Strings brings another giant of jazz to Prague

Wayne Shorter is universally regarded as one of the most important performers and composers in jazz and modern music. His career is unrivalled: he was a key member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis’s second great Quintet, and the founder of the groundbreaking Weather Report – but Shorter’s ever-restless spirit keeps him producing highly innovative music even as he embarks on his ninth decade.

Shorter’s current quartet is considered by many to be the finest band in contemporary jazz, featuring Brian Blade on drums, bassist John Pattitucci, and pianist Danilo Perez. Their 2013 release ‘Without a Net’ was described by one reviewer as ‘full to bursting point with breathtaking music.’ For this special concert, the band will be augmented by the Prague Philharmonia under the baton of Martin Kumzak, playing Shorter’s own arrangements of compositions from throughout his career. Age has not withered this unique musician: Wayne Shorter is busy pushing himself to ever-greater heights. This promises to be an evening of visionary music played by the some of the best in the business.

‘The most important living composer in jazz.’

‘Shorter’s present-tense evolution is as impressive as his past triumphs.’
